01. Switch to a new theme

Sometimes a fresh look is all you need to get back into the swing of things and fall in your love with your blog again. This is especially true if you’ve had your theme for a long time or it isn’t quite doing what you want.

Money tight or find it hard making a decision? Check out some of these beautiful free themes you can install straight from your Dashboard.

02. Get your thoughts in order

Make a plan that fits your goals, for example a breakdown of your big aims into small steps, a brainstorm of post ideas, a checklist of clean up tasks or promotion ideas.

If you feel overwhelmed by the amount of things you need to do, create a master list and copy 4 tasks to another list, then hide your master list to concentrate on the tasks at hand. Every task completed, no matter how small, is a step closer to your goals.

Large blogs or ones that have been neglected for a while benefit from dual to do lists: one list of new tasks such as writing new posts, and one list for cleaning up old posts and pages (for example adding new information, redoing images, and updating links).

03. Spring clean your drafts

Draft overwhelm is real. If you suffer from it and have a lot of drafts, be ruthless – don’t keep half-finished posts or post titles you know you’ll never get around to writing. If you hate getting rid, make a copy of everything in Google Docs just in case there’s an idea you keep coming back to.

04. Change up your dashboard

It may sound crazy but even changing the color scheme of your dashboard can help you feel motivated to work on your blog again.

WordPress includes a few different color themes by default. Go to Users > All Users and click on your user. Then choose from the selection of ‘Admin Color Schemes’ available and save your changes.

Reviewing all your plugins and rearranging your dashboard modules by dragging and dropping them or minimizing ones you don’t use also helps. Adding useful functionality to your dashboard, like an overview of your analytics with the Google Analytics Dashboard plugin, can help motivate you.

05. Revisit the classics

Review and rewrite some of the pages and areas on your site that get the most traffic and attention, e.g. your “About” page, your “Start Here” page, your footer, and your sidebar.

06. Add something fresh

Whether you’re committing to a full rebrand, incorporating a new logo, or even just making a small change like a photo swap, it can be just the thing you need to lift your blog.

07. Make a gratitude list

Make a list of things you love about blogging, incorporating things like the people, community, reasons you started, achievements so far, and the benefits you’ve seen from it. No matter how small the achievement may seem to you, make a note of it…

…and then turn what you’ve written into your next blog post.
