“I’ve found over the years that running competitions can be a great way to try and build a following. If you are running one from your website then utilising a tool such as gleam or rafflecopter allows you to add social media visits or follows, while running them directly on your social media can also be a great way to get your accounts out there. However do check the rules of each social media before setting one up as they all have their own rules.”

“I start a Facebook group in a related niche and then connect it to my page. Groups have more organic reach and engagement and are a great jump off point for growing all social channels.”

“Engagement! By engaging with others who share similar content and being interested in what they post can help you build connections, relationships and also others will click on your account to view your content.:

“Niche down and post often, daily if poss. Videos (reels) seem to get more attention. I always add a ton of related hashtags, have always ignored the ‘latest’ advice. My Insta and FB have gone a bit crazy in the past couple of months! My FB content is just posted automatically from Insta.”

“Engaging with like accounts, being using descriptive hashtags, engaging content that either engages, entertains or educates.”

“Quality over quantity! Letting your passions shine through, people can tell when you really care about something which helps them engage with your content and press the follow button.”

“I engage with my fb page account in Facebook groups and related Instagram accounts naturally as much as I can. I also post in Facebook groups, and answer with my content to related questions, queries.”

“Join Facebook groups related to your niche. You can either use your personal account or your Facebook Page. Then, share your posts to these groups. Make sure your post provides value to your readers. It’s also important to have nice photos. This is the first thing that people will see and will make them want to engage with your post.”

“I only recently started uploading short videos in my Youtube channel and I have seen an increase in subscriptions in a short while. Especially if you are a travel blog, this will help you get either more traffic in your blog or develop a new income from Youtube in the future – when you have enough subscribers.”

“For strict numbers, run a giveaway with the prize related to your niche. You may not get the most engaged followers but if you get it right it can be a great way to boost your overall follower count.”

“I recently tried promoting my IG on my newsletter. (Yes, I have the tiny SM icons on my newsletter footer but it seems that everyone ignores those). On my profile, I clicked “share profile” and got a QR code with my account name. I made that into a graphic with a link to the IG account and added some text saying that I’d love to connect on IG. I have seen an uptick in followers! I’m also going to add it to my welcome email for subscribers.”

“Remember to utilise hashtags on platforms that support them. Instagram for instance allows up to 30 per post and while you might not want to use them all (there is debate if less is more) it is well worth looking for hashtags that are trending and those that don’t have a to high volume of photos being posted to them. Look for hashtags that have a middle of the road amount of submissions so you aren’t pushed too quickly from being seen and hopefully followed yet it still has a nice amount of people checking it. X/Twitter is another platform where hashtags can work well, there are a number of blogger specific hashtags which might work if your sharing posts as well as using simple ones which complement the themes of your posts.”

And our top tip – social media networks change all the time, so find a go-to source for the platform you’re concentrating on by following an influencer or content creator on that platform. See what they’re up to, what hooks and music they use, and what tips they give about what’s hot and what’s not. This is a good way to get bitesize info without feeling overwhelmed or getting conflicting information. Then try those things out for yourself to see what works well for you and what doesn’t land with your audience.
